Prof. Matthias Thommes and Dr. Carlos Cuadrado Collados were involved in a scientific collaboration with the groups of Prof. Karl Mandel and Prof. Julien Bachmann from the Department of Chemistry. In this work, nanoparticles were assembled into supraparticles by a novel synthesis route based on spray-drying and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In particular, iron oxide supraparticles were coated with aluminum oxide nanoparticles by varying the ALD cycles and were further characterized in detail. This novel method enables the design of tailored materials with well-defined surface properties, e.g. for catalysis or sensor technology.

The results of this collaboration were recently published in the high impact journal Small Methods (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/smtd.202101296).
